Early Modern Theater in Spain and France: A Discussion with Ryan Prendergast and Anna Rosensweig

April 11, 2017
04:45 PM - 06:00 PM
Humanities Center Conference Room D, 212 Rush Rhees Library, River Campus

In this roundtable discussion, Ryan Prendergast (Associate Professor of Spanish) and Anna Rosensweig (Assistant Professor of French) will discuss two plays that form the basis of the Don Juan myth in literature: Tirso de Molina's El burlador de Sevilla y el convidado de piedra (The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest) [1630] and Moliere's Dom Juan ou le Festin de pierre (Dom Juan or The Feast with the Statue) [1665]. By focusing on the representations of debt and power in these works, Ryan and Anna will propose readings of this infamous character and his sociopolitical contexts. They will also suggest connections between these main themes and role of early modern theater in France and Spain.
