Biography
Alice Seixas is an assistant professor of instruction in the Spanish program at the University of Rochester. Originally from Brazil, she holds an MA in Spanish from Florida State University and is completing her PhD in Spanish Linguistics at the University at Albany, SUNY. Her dissertation investigates subject pronoun variation in Spanish among Hispanic immigrants living in Rio de Janeiro, the first quantitative study of this community, and explores how language contact with Portuguese shapes their everyday speech. Her research sits at the intersection of sociolinguistics, language contact, and variationist linguistics. She has several years of experience teaching Spanish and Portuguese at the university level, including a self-designed course on Brazilian Culture and Society, and is passionate about building language courses that place culture at the center of learning.
