Typical Course Schedule—First 2 Years

FRESHMAN YEAR

1. Biology Introductory Course I (Select one)

  • BIO 110: Principles of Biology I
  • BIO 112: Perspectives in Biology I - students with BIO AP exam scores of 4, 5, or IB exam scores of 7 have the option to take BIO 112 instead of 110

1. Biology Introductory Course II (Select one)

  • BIO 111: Principles of Biology II
  • BIO 113: Perspectives in Biology II - students with BIO AP exam scores of 4, 5, or IB exam scores of 7 have the option to take BIO 113 instead of 111
  • BIO 115 (New spring '16) - for students with ecology and evolutionary biology interests

2. CHM 131 General Chemistry I

  • Optional for students with AP credit for CHM 131 as it may be used to satisfy general chemistry I requirement 
    • Students with pre-med interests should consult the Health Professions Advising Office for consultation on applicability of AP credit to med school requirements

    • Students with AP CHM credit who opt take the CHM 171/173 & 172/210 freshman organic series may use satisfy general chemistry and organic chemistry requirements for UPBM majors

2. CHM 132 General Chemistry II

  • Optional for students with AP credit for CHM 132 as it may be used to satisfy general chemistry II requirement 
    • Students with pre-med interests should consult the Health Professions Advising Office for consultation on applicability of AP credit to med school requirements

    • Students with AP CHM credit who opt take the CHM 171/173 & 172/210 freshman organic series may use satisfy general chemistry and organic chemistry requirements for UPBM majors

1. Introductory Genetics (Select one)

  • BIO 190: The Human Genome - required for BS major in ecology and evolutionary biology

  • BIO 198: Principles of Genetics - required for BS major in biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, molecular genetics, and microbiology (see neuroscience website for application to major)
    •  Either may be used to satisfy requirement for the BA in biological sciences and the BS in computational biology

    • Either may be used for students on pre-med tracks

1. Introductory Biochemistry (Select one)

  • BIO 250: Intro to Biochemistry

  • BIO 252: Principles of Biochemistry - strongly recommended BS in biochemistry track

    •  Required for BS majors in biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, molecular genetics, and microbiology
    • Optional for the BA in biological sciences and the BS major in ecology and evolutionary biology.
    • Recommended for students with medical school interests
2. CHM 203/207: Organic Chemistry I + Lab - students with credit for CHM 171/173 Freshman Organic Chemistry I may use to satisfy requirement 2. CHM 204/208: Organic Chemistry II + Lab - students with credit for CHM 172/210 Freshman Organic Chemistry II may use to satisfy requirement
