Summer Programs

The Department of Chemistry offers two summer research programs for undergraduates:

Summer Research—NSF REU

Rochester is a site for the NSF REU program, providing funding for a number of students every summer. As required by NSF policy, the program is open only to domestic students, and preference will be given to students from schools that do not have a PhD program in chemistry. Underrepresented minority students and women are especially encouraged to apply.

Summer research students have their own research problem, a specific faculty advisor, and a specific day-to-day graduate student or postdoctoral mentor. Everybody participates in a weekly group meeting, reporting to each other on their research projects and results in oral, poster, and written form.

For specific examples of research projects, see the 2014 poster titles (PDF) of students who participated in a recent summer.

Discussions of careers, graduate work, and scientific ethics are also part of the experience.

Dates, Applications, and Deadlines

The 2017 program will run from May 31 to August 4.

To apply, fill out one of the following applications and submit it to weston@chem.rochester.edu:

Applications are due February 14, 2017. The department all accepts application via mail or fax.

Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.

Please note this program is only open to US citizens and permanent residents. If you are an international student interested in doing summer research at Rochester please see the Summer Fellowship Program for International Undergraduate Students.

Summer Research—International Undergraduate Students

The Summer Fellowship Program for international undergraduate students is designed to provide outstanding chemistry students from all over the world an opportunity to conduct first-class research at the University of Rochester.

Students work closely with a faculty member in the department for approximately 8-10 weeks.

How to Apply

Complete the online application form to apply to the 2016 summer research program. Make sure to attach a (unofficial) copy of your transcripts (with English translation) and a copy of your CV in PDF format.

Please ask two senior scientists familiar with your work to serve as referees, and provide their contact information in the application form. A copy of your application and instructions on how to submit their reference letter will be sent to them from summer@chem.rochester.edu.

For full consideration all application materials and recommendation letters should be sent by February 22, 2016. For additional information about this program, contact summer@chem.rochester.edu
