Chemistry Student Bevan Whitehead Accepted to DoE Program
Congratulations to Bevan Whitehead for being a recipient of the Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program (SCGSR)!

Only 79 PhD students nationwide were selected for this program.
The goal of Bevan's project is to analyze the mechanism of diffusion of fluorinated gases into Zn(fba), a metal–organic framework (MOF), using neutron vibrational spectroscopy. This framework has been shown to have the highest selectivity for tetrafluoromethane versus nitrogen among all moisture-stable MOFs currently published in literature. However, the mechanism of fluorinated gas diffusion is not well understood. Understanding this mechanism of uptake and diffusion is vital for improving upon this framework to design more efficient and selective materials for the capture of fluorocompound gases, a class of highly potent greenhouse gases.
“SCGSR is a unique opportunity for the next generation of scientists to gain hands-on knowledge and train with our best minds at the DOE national labs,” said Harriet Kung, Acting Director of the DOE Office of Science, in the Office of Science blog. “Providing this experience will help DOE secure the nation’s status at the forefront of discovery and innovation.”
Congrats again, Bevan!
