Advanced Certificate in Data Science

The advanced certificate in data science is a multidisciplinary, cross-departmental, graduate credential administered by the University of Rochester’s Goergen Institute of Data Science. The certificate program prepares students to apply data science techniques, including machine learning, to derive insights from large data sets in various application domains.

It is designed for individuals with working knowledge of data science, gained through industry or academic experience, who would like to formalize their training with a deeper mastery of fundamental concepts in the field. The program is approved by the New York State Board of Education.

Admissions Criteria

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree (all majors are considered)
  • One year equivalent of coursework in undergraduate calculus and linear algebra
  • Introductory programming and data structures knowledge (in Python or Java) through coursework, or equivalent experience
  • Interest in and motivation to pursue large scale quantitative data analytics

Applying

To apply, submit an online application with the following material:

  • Official transcript(s) from bachelor’s degree (and any other higher education experiences)
  • Personal statement describing:
    • Prior experience
    • Career and educational goals
  • Resume/CV
  • Two letters of recommendation (must be received by March 15)
  • GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scores not required

Deadline to Apply: Apply by March 15, 2020 to be considered for Fall 2020 admissions. There is a fee associated with this application which may be waived for University of Rochester graduate students, employees, and alumni. Please contact our office at gids-advcert@rochester.edu to waive the fee BEFORE submitting your application.

Program Requirements

The Advanced Certificate in Data Science program is 16 credits, or the equivalent of four graduate level courses. It can be completed in two to four semesters of part-time study. Courses are only offered during the fall and spring semesters.

Advanced Certificate in Data Science Course Plans

Certificate Plan A (Typical)

  • DSC 462: Computational Introduction to Statistics
  • DSC 465: Intermediate Statistical and Computational Methods
  • DSC 401: Tools for Data Science
  • DSC 440: Data Mining

Certificate Plan B

Students with an academic background in computational statistics [equivalent to DSC 462] may choose this track:

  • DSC 465: Intermediate Statistical and Computational Methods
  • DSC 401: Tools for Data Science
  • DSC 440: Data Mining
  • One Elective

Certificate Plan C

Students with prior academic experience in data science programming tools [equivalent to DSC 401] may choose this track:

  • DSC 462: Computational Introduction to Statistics
  • DSC 465: Intermediate Statistical and Computational Methods
  • DSC 440: Data Mining
  • One Elective

Transferring Credits to Masters in Data Science
