Behind the Test Tube: Q&A
Daniela Carmona-Pérez—Graduate Student

What do you like to do when not in the department?
Puebla, México. It is a city located at the foot of one of Mexico’s highest volcanoes, known as Popocatepetl!
Why did you choose chemistry as a career?
I’m passionate about chemistry because I believe that, through it, we can understand practically everything around us and find solutions to many of the world's major problems, such as finding better energy sources or designing more effective drugs to combat certain diseases.
What is your proudest accomplishment while at the URochester?
I am very proud to have founded the Chemistry Student Safety Team in our department, together with Alana, Liam, and Roberto—the best team ever!
What do you like to do when not in the department?
In my free time, I like to relax by watching TV shows and anime and playing video games. I also enjoy exploring local cafés and restaurants. In summer, I love visiting the Finger Lakes region and its vineyards. In the autumn, there's nothing better than visiting the Adirondack Mountains.
A Rochester must?
Lilac Festival! What an awesome way to say goodbye to winter and embrace the summer vibes!
Feast/meal of the times? Details, please!
Pozole rojo! This is a rich, comforting soup starring hominy, tender pork or chicken, and a savory sauce made with a variety of dried chiles. It is served topped with lettuce, onion, oregano, lime juice, and sometimes radishes, along with some tostadas or tortilla chips on the side for some crunch. It's like a hug for the soul!
A holiday that rocks? Care to tell us why?
September 16, Independence Day of Mexico! It has everything: delicious food, music, dancing, and fireworks. It’s a lot of fun :D
Fun fact or quote:
During my time at high school, I was a member of the Aguiluchos Marching Band, and I had the opportunity to perform in Pasadena in the 124th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade in 2013.
The goal of this initiative is to highlight the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives in the Department of Chemistry and help our community develop stronger connections and synergies.
