Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is at the core of all of our programs, from natural and social sciences to humanities. At the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) we know that what you learn in the classroom is only half the equation when preparing for the next step in your career.

Research

Our students work alongside industry leading professors as they conduct cutting-edge research. In the lab, students develop problem-solving skills while integrating their classroom learning with real-world experience. SAS students often engage in research over the summer through programs such as our NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and Schwartz Discover Grants.

Study Abroad

See the world, gain a global perspective, and build your résumé—all before you graduate with study abroad. So long as you get approval before you leave, you can fulfill requirements in your major, minor, or complete a cluster while studying abroad. Some students event conduct research or intern abroad.

Internships

Through internships our students gain real-life experience in a field of interest that, in many cases, can lead to a full-time job. Students do both paid and unpaid internships, helping them to build their professional network and a strong résumé. Students can find internships through the University online job board, Handshake, where employers go to actively recruit University of Rochester students.

Teaching Assistantships

Demonstrate your expertise, through an undergraduate teaching assistantship. Teaching assistants (TAs) are hired to assist with things like grading, leading review sessions, running study groups, and conducting demonstrations. Some of these positions are paid and some are for credit. Talk to your undergraduate coordinator to see if your department offers undergraduate teaching assistantships.

Performances

Every year the University’s student body performs hundreds of performances—in music, dance, theater, comedy and more. These may be formal performances through the academic departments, but could also be casual or competitive performances run by student organizations.
