Daniel Pyskaty, an undergraduate senior majoring in Brain & Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics, was accepted to present at the Acoustical Society of America in May 2025. The research he'll present, "Vowel Dispersion: Nonlinearities of the Auditory Pathway Constrain the Cross-Linguistic Structure of Vowel Systems" is a joint project with Daniel Guest, Douglas Schwarz, Joyce McDonough, and Laurel Carney.

In addition to his conference presentation, Daniel was awarded a competitive summer grant through the University of Rochester’s Learning Center to work with Professors Laurel Carney and Joyce McDonough on Speech on the Brain—a course jointly offered by Linguistics and Brain & Cognitive Sciences. The program supports newly graduated students as they collaborate with faculty to develop course materials for future offerings. As part of an interdisciplinary initiative, Daniel will join a team of undergraduate and graduate students from fields including Linguistics, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Psychology, and more to explore how the brain processes speech, language, and music.
