Phonetics and Phonology Lab

Work in the Phonetics and Phonology Lab investigates the physical, cognitive, and systematic properties of human speech through experimental and computational methods. We study how sounds are produced, perceived, and patterned across languages, drawing on tools from acoustic analysis, articulatory imaging (including ultrasound), auditory modeling, and statistical analysis. Core research areas include tone and prosody, field phonetics and language documentation, nasality, and the neural representation of speech sounds. Current projects integrate linguistic theory with speech technology, neuroscience, and music cognition to advance our understanding of speech as a complex, embodied mode of communication.
