Last month, the Ani & Mark Gabrellian Director of the Humanities Center, Peter H. Christensen, attended the 2025 National Humanities Alliance (NHA) Annual Meeting and Humanities Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. This event provided an opportunity to connect with a growing number of humanities advocates from across the country. During the Annual Meeting, participants explored approaches to year-round advocacy on college campuses and in local communities, while also meeting with House and Senate representatives to advocate for federal funding for the humanities. Christensen personally met with the offices of 7 members of congress and lobbied for them to support continued funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities, Title VI, and the Fulbright-Hays program and encouraged those not yet involved to join the Congressional Humanities Caucus.
In addition to his advocacy efforts in Washington, DC, Christensen visited the Humanities Centers at both the University of Miami and the University of Texas. These visits allowed for exploring opportunities for cross-institutional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and developing new strategies to support and advance interdisciplinary humanities research.
