Bio

Tp Coughlin is the Humanities Center Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Rochester. Their manuscript-in-progress, Forming the Formless: Speculative Genders and the Pre-history of Nonbinary Identity, analyzes the way gender was speculatively reimagined in the decades after WWII in welfare regulation, case law, economic theory, and speculative fiction. Drawing on queer of color materialist theories and queer formalism, they attend to how these speculations not only responded to social and material crises at the time but also produced the conditions of possibility for nonbinary identity to emerge in the 21st century.
