Honors in Research in Dance

To be considered a candidate for the honors in research in dance, students must meet the following requirements before applying:

  • Have a grade-point average of 5 or higher within the major
  • Have successfully completed at least 20 credits in the program
  • Have demonstrated proficiency in creative and written work, shown through quality and committed participation in one or more of the following:
    • Mentored concerts as performers and/or choreographers
    • Undergraduate research
    • Excellent written work within their dance major courses

Applying to the Program

To apply, students must submit an application proposal to the program, the subject of which has been mutually agreed upon, and signed, by the student and their chosen faculty advisor.

The faculty honors committee will review each application with one of the following possible outcomes:

  • Accepted
  • Accepted with conditions
  • Denied by the faculty honors committee

Proposals must be submitted no later than November 15 of a student’s junior year.

At the end of each semester after acceptance or acceptance with conditions, the faculty committee will review the progress and decide whether the student can continue in the honors in research program.

Program Requirements

Once accepted, students in the honors program must complete additional credit requirements, as well as a capstone paper. Honors students must also keep their GPA above the program’s listed minimum grade point average.

Credit Requirements

Honors students must complete 12 extra credits beyond the major requirements, with at least:

  • Four credits from a community-engaged dance course
  • Four credits from within the creative expression or embodied practice categories, as related to your honors project

Though not required, we recommend four credits from the citizenship category. The remaining credits can be from any dance course that supports your honors project.

Note: In consultation with the director and/or faculty advisor, a student presenting a significant work of choreography or performance over and above what is typically expected or completing an internship (such as ART New York) or summer intensive, may be able to use this experience as a substitute for up to four credits.

Capstone Paper

Honors students must complete a distinguished capstone paper, approximately thirty-five pages in length. To complete this paper, students can expand on the research they did in DANC 389W: Senior Seminar, or another significant research project that is above and beyond what your courses require.

Once complete, the paper will be evaluated by the student's project advisor, as well as a second reader (selected together by the advisor and the student). One copy of this honors capstone will be preserved and shared by the Program of Dance and Movement.

Grade Point Average

Students must maintain a 3.5 grade point average within the major.
