Fresh off his travels presenting at the CIG and Gordon research conferences, our PhD student Jean-Joel Legre has just published his latest paper. In this new work, Jean-Joel tackles a fundamental question: what creates the distinct layers, or “discontinuities,” deep within the Earth’s upper mantle beneath the African continent? His research helps unravel whether these boundaries are caused by sharp changes in temperature, shifts in mineral structure, or the presence of deep melt, providing a clearer picture of the geological forces that have shaped the continent from below. He is now back in Rochester, pushing forward on the next chapter of his PhD.
