Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a new major/minor curriculum starting fall 2026?
Yes! We are very excited to announce a new major (BS and BA) and minor curriculum starting in fall 2026. Curriculum updates to the business programs will take effect in fall 2026. Current students who have an intended or declared business major before fall 2026 can request to complete the old curriculum or opt into the new curriculum. Students graduating on or before August 31, 2026, must follow the old curriculum. Incoming students for fall 2026 will follow the new curriculum. Please connect with your business program advisor if you have any questions.
What degrees do you offer in business?
We offer a Bachelor of Science (BS), a Bachelor of Arts (BA), and a minor.
Who grants the business degree at the University of Rochester?
Simon Business School grants the undergraduate business degrees, starting with the Class of 2027.
Are the business majors and minor considered social sciences for the Rochester Curriculum?
Yes! All our offerings count toward the social science division of the Rochester Curriculum starting fall 2026.
What is the difference between the BS and BA degrees in business?
Each BS degree has a specific track and consists of 15 classes in total, comprising nine core courses and six electives. The BA is more of a breadth degree as it does not have a track specialization. The BA consists of 12 courses in total, nine core courses and three electives (for the new curriculum). The BA also requires a second major/degree. The pre-major and core requirements between the majors are the same.
What is the difference between the BS tracks?
Each BS degree has a different specialized track: accounting, business analytics, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems, and marketing. Each track is comprised of set of six track courses/electives, allowing you a greater degree of specialization in your chosen field. The pre-major and core courses for each BS track are the same. If you’re unsure about which track to choose, schedule a meeting with an advisor or consider enrolling in our BUS 101: Introduction to Business course.
Do you offer a minor or cluster?
We offer a minor in business! We do not offer any cluster options as of now. Here is the minor requirements page.
Will my advanced placement courses be considered toward my curriculum in business?
Yes- we accept AP and IB credit for math and statistics for the pre-major requirement (see Finance for specific statistics requirements), and accept certain computer science courses. Students who received AP or IB credit for ECON 108: Principles of Economics must take one additional 200-level ECON course.
I’m a first-year student. What should I take so I can declare business as my major or minor?
To declare a business major (both BS and BA), you will need to complete calculus (MATH 141-142, MATH 161, or MATH 171) and a statistics course. For the finance track, either STAT 190, ECON 230, or MATH 203 are required for statistics. You can find the required courses on our website. You do not need to complete the pre-major courses to start taking business core classes (however, please double-check course prerequisites before registering).
What does the business curriculum look like?
We’ve created sample schedules. Check them out here:
Are the business majors STEM-designated?
Yes! The BA and BS (all six tracks) in business are STEM-designated degree programs. International students in the United States on F-1 visas are eligible to work for three years in the US and gain valuable experience in the workplace.
Are you AACSB Accredited?
We are! We are proud to be recognized as an AACSB-Accredited University. AACSB International is the world's largest network and global standard-setting body for business education. Our accreditation is recognized worldwide as the highest standard of quality, with only six percent of institutions offering business degrees worldwide having achieved AACSB accreditation and displaying the prestigious seal. AACSB-accredited schools are trailblazers in teaching, research, and societal impact.
Does the business program accept transfer credit?
We accept up to three transfer courses toward a business major, and two courses toward a business minor. However, if using three transfer courses for a major, at least one must come from an AACSB Accredited Institution. To note, for transfer students, the policy is dependent upon incoming class year—please see the transfer student policy page. Reach out to a business program advisor with any questions.
Do you offer 4+1 or other accelerated master’s programs?
Yes, we offer a program called the Business Master’s Pathway. The Business Master’s Pathway is a five-year BA/BS + MS program, which offers a streamlined route into one of Simon’s full-time MS programs: Accountancy, AI in Business, Business Analytics, Marketing Analytics, or Finance. The Business Master’s Pathway offers high-achieving undergraduates a streamlined route into a Simon master’s degree—either through early assurance at the time of undergraduate admission or through an accelerated application during junior year. See the Business Master's Pathway overview page for more information.
Can I study abroad as a business major or minor?
Absolutely! Over half of our business majors and minors study abroad. Our advisors can help create a plan that includes study abroad! Make sure to consult the transfer credit requirements page.
Can I double major as a business major?
Students can double major. In fact, more than half of current business majors are pursuing a second major! Schedule an appointment with one of our advisors to see how you can fit a second major into your schedule. You cannot, however, officially declare two tracks within the BS business major or declare both a business major and minor.
Where do people with business degrees go after graduation?
You can find a detailed list of where students go using the Career Outcomes page on the Greene Center website.
Do I need to have an internship during college?
Internships are a wonderful opportunity to put your classroom skills to use, try out different career paths, and potentially receive a job offer. We have an abundance of in-house and college resources to help you find and take part in an internship! However, students do not “need” to have an internship for their business major.
