A wide range of materials and techniques from metal and welding to assemblage, from wood to experimental methods and media is explored in the service of three dimensional art making. Investigations of the specific qualities of three -dimensional media (i.e. space, form, scale, mass) and how they can convey ideas are made within a contemporary framework. Artworks synthesize a particular choice and use of materials and a concept or expression. It is the aim of this class to develop this synthesis, and in so doing, begin to develop the students' own working creative vocabulary. Not open to seniors. Studio art lab supplies fee: $78. If the course fills and you would like to be added to the wait list, please go to https://www.sageart.center/resources.

Humans and machines, infrastructure and architecture, community, and culture: how do these relationships shape our imagination of sounds and music? Through practice-based research, we will explore the aural environments generated by the industrial and post-industrial history of cities along the Rust Belt, studying, for example, how Industrial Fordism’s merger of human and machine informed the rise of sample culture and machine-based rhythm and music. Using Detroit as our case study, we will examine how African-American arts, culture, and history, combined with the rise of the automobile industry, produced Detroit Techno as way for artists to respond to the sonic architecture of their environment. Meanwhile, we will be making our own field recordings of our local urban environments and electronically processing them into tones and beats, and then sequencing and mixing our research into sonic productions using non-screen-based hardware devices. Not open to seniors. Studio art lab supply fee applied.

Intro to Studio Practice provides a broad framework for contemporary art making through creative production, discussion, presentation, and critique. Scheduled class time will be a combination of lecture, technical demonstration and studio/work time. Rather than focusing on a single medium such as drawing, this course gives students the opportunity to try out a broad range of art approaches and media which, depending upon the instructor, might include a combination of drawing, printmaking, sculpture, performance, sound art, conceptual art, and/or media that are not traditionally used for making art. Practice and critique, readings and discussion combine to place emphasis on the visual investigation necessary to create educated and challenging art. Not open to seniors. Studio art lab supply fee applied.

This course seeks to improve students' writing and analytical skills through analysis and experimentation with different styles of writing about contemporary and historical arts. Students analyze prose by artists, historians, cultural critics, poets, and others who have written on the visual arts, with an eye towards how writing on art can be a tool for improving expression in many areas. Slide lectures, discussions, and writing projects on objects of diverse media and historical eras will be augmented by visiting speakers and field trips to museums and galleries. This course fulfills one-half of the upper level writing requirement for both studio and art history majors. Permission of instructor required.

This studio art course challenges students to explore the furthest horizons of contemporary art and to reflect upon the multitude of ways in which art can record, illuminate, transform, contribute to, and engage with the world. The semester starts with performance art projects which can either be performed live (in class) or privately (outside of class) with documentation. As the semester proceeds, the projects will become increasingly student-driven. In past semesters, topics have included environmental awareness, personal identity, animal rights, gender studies, mental health, political activism, new technologies, and global events. We look at scores of artists from the 1960s to the present for inspiration and, of equal importance, learn from each other. For the final project, we will design socially engaged initiatives that address local and global community needs, ultimately blurring the boundaries between art and life. This open-media studio art course is a space for incubating ideas and for empowering voices. No previous experience in performance art and/or socially engaged art is necessary. All personalities, from the most introverted to the most extroverted, are welcome. There is no prerequisite beyond curiosity. Contact the professor with questions. Studio art lab supply fee applied.

This is the first of a two-semester senior capstone course designed to support the transition between undergraduate coursework and independent, professional, and graduate pursuits. It is a core requirement of the studio art degree. The fall semester of this series has two major components: (1) Studio Production/Critique and (2) Professional Development. For the studio production/critique component, students will maintain a rigorous, self-motivated studio practice, regularly participate in critical discussions and critiques and develop artist statements. Emphasis is placed upon a shift to independent project design. For the professional development component, students will create personal websites, develop resumes, apply for professional exhibitions, prepare high quality documentation of their art, and gain exposure to critical career resources. The fall semester will culminate in a group exhibition and public artist talks by students. Studio Art Fee: $50. This course is only open to senior Studio Art majors.

This advanced level course provides a broad framework for drawing and collage and areas of art production adjacent to it. The exploration, experimentation and application of two-dimensional materials and images – found, appropriated, and drawn - will help lead to a mature level of studio production. Every step toward the resolution of a work should be seen as an opportunity to question its direction, process, medium, and meaning. All completed projects will employ both formal considerations as well as thoughtful content and all are intended for an audience. Practice and critique, readings and discussion combine to place emphasis on the visual investigation necessary to create and engage with informed and challenging art. Studio art lab supply fee applied. Permission of instructor. Prerequisite of SART 111, 181, 182 or 190 |
