Through practice-based research, students will conduct field recordings of their local urban areas and transform these sounds into musical compositions using non-screen-based hardware devices. This course introduces the basic aesthetic and technical elements of video production. Emphasis is on the creative use and understanding of the video medium while learning to use the video camera, video editing processes and the fundamental procedures of planning video projects. Strategies for the use of video as an art-making tool will be explored. Works by artists and directors critically exploring media of film and video will be viewed and discussed. Video techniques will be studied through screenings, group discussions, readings, practice sessions and presentations of original video projects made during the course. Sophomores and Juniors with officially declared FMS and SA majors are given priority registration; followed by sophomores and juniors with officially declared FMS and SA minors. Intro to Studio Practice provides a broad framework for contemporary art making through creative production, discussion, presentation, and critique. Scheduled class time will be a combination of lecture, technical demonstration and studio/work time. Rather than focusing on a single medium such as drawing, this course gives students the opportunity to try out a broad range of art approaches and media which, depending upon the instructor, might include a combination of drawing, printmaking, sculpture, performance, sound art, conceptual art, and/or media that are not traditionally used for making art. This course seeks to improve students' writing and analytical skills through analysis and experimentation with different styles of writing about contemporary and historical arts. Students analyze prose by artists, historians, cultural critics, poets, and others who have written on the visual arts, with an eye towards how writing on art can be a tool for improving expression in many areas. Slide lectures, discussions, and writing projects on objects of diverse media and historical eras will be augmented by visiting speakers and field trips to museums and galleries. This course fulfills one-half of the upper level writing requirement for both studio and art history majors. Permission of instructor required.

The class will examine and interrogate the multiple roles that contemporary photography and related media plays within our unique cultural moment with an emphasis on hybrid/multidisciplinary approaches to the medium. The class projects will explore site-specific photographic installation, time based imagery, large format printing, book and object making. Digital processes and studio lighting techniques will also be covered. In conjunction to their studio project, students will view and analyze a range of photographic practices, read contemporary criticism and engage in probing discussion and original writing. Upon completion of this course, students will have the capacity to more confidently engage the work they make within the broader discourse of art and will acquire an understanding of the concepts and vocabulary necessary for critical discussion of photographic work, their own and that of others. This course equips students with essential tools and strategies for securing internship opportunities, emphasizing professional growth for career and advanced degree readiness. While specifically designed to help students apply for internships in New York City as part of the Art New York program, the skills gained in this course such as resume building, cover letter writing, workplace communication, portfolio development, and effective job searching are transferable to all disciplinary paths. Through a combination of group and individual meetings, as well as independent work, students will refine their application materials, learn how to research opportunities, and develop the confidence to navigate the competitive internship landscape.
