Senior piano recital by 2016 UR music major, Jenny Sun. From Fargo, North Dakota, Sun studied piano from Robert Groves at the North Dakota State University and was very involved in music throughout her life. She has won the 2012-2013 River Campus Concerto Competition, Young Artists Solo Competition, Sue Simpson Memorial Scholarship Piano Competition, Scott’s Piano Competition, and Iva Fillebrown Piano Competition. In addition to piano, Sun also studied flute under Debora Harris at Concordia College and was the Principal Flutist in the North Dakota Senior High All State Band/Orchestra for all four years of high school. She has won the FMAYS 2011 Concerto Competition on flute, earned Outstanding Performance ratings at EDC Solo/Ensemble Contest, and received the John Philip Sousa Award for band. She has also performed in recitals with a cause, where all proceeds go toward the eradication of polio. Along with classical music, Sun is also actively involved in jazz. In the summer of 2011, Sun performed with her high school jazz ensemble in the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on piano and flute. Sun currently studies primary piano under Shichao Zhang at the Eastman School of Music (who will accompany Jenny on a Schumann piano concerto). Sun will be returning to the University of Rochester as a Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year Scholar next year and will be developing a music and arts education enrichment program.
