My research is motivated by the need to better understand the ocean’s “biological pump” – the suite of microbial processes that transfers carbon from surface waters to the deep ocean, where it is sequestered out of contact with the atmosphere. Specific interests include the cycling of nutrients and trace elements that limit primary production and shape marine ecosystems, and the respiration of sinking organic particles by microbes in the dark ocean.
