
Sakura Hamazaki awarded the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation Fellowship
Sakura Hamazaki was awarded a two-year fellowship in support of her research project for her grant application entitled “Impact of calcium entry through Cav1.1 in myotonic dystrophy myopathy”. Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) 2024 Research Fellowship Program.
This round of Research Fellowship applications was extremely competitive. Thirteen experts independently reviewed and scored the applications and made recommendations to the MDF Boards, who made the final selection.

Kejia Zhang awarded Messersmith Fellowship
Kejia Zhang was awarded a University of Rochester Agnes M. Messersmith and George Messersmith Dissertation Fellowship for 2024-2025! This fellowship was first endowed by the Messersmith family in 1958 to support graduate students across disciplines in the sciences. It is one of the University’s most competitive dissertation fellowships and is given to students who display exceptional ability and promise.
The award offers stipend support for Kejia’s dissertation work on “Elucidating the role of tRNA Methyltransferase 1 in tRNA Integrity, Translation and Neurodevelopment”

Roger White wins poster award
Roger White presented a talk at the FASEB Science Research Conference “Lipid droplets: From Mechanisms to Disease” in St Paul, MN and won a poster award.

Natasha Vacca awarded NSF-GRFP and Sproul Fellowship in Biology
Natasha Vacca was awarded a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and strength of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. Since 1952, the program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, including STEM education. NSF GRFP was established to recruit and support individuals who demonstrate the potential to make significant contributions in STEM, including STEM education. NSF encourages applications from the full spectrum of talent that the U.S. has to offer.
She also was awarded a Sproul Fellowship in the Department of Biology.

Airat Ibragimov awarded Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship in Aging Research
Airat Ibragimov, a postdoctoral research associate in the Gorbunova/Seluanov Lab was recently awarded a Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship in Aging Research. This one-year fellowship supports postdoctoral fellows who direct their research towards basic research mechanisms of aging and/or translational findings that have potential to directly benefit human health.
