Amanda Jo Lake, who prefers to go by Ajo, is Deaf. She was born and raised in Montana. Before joining the University of Rochester in fall 2025, she lived in Texas for 15 years. Ajo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and a Master of Arts degree in Sign Language Education from Gallaudet University. At the University of Rochester, she teaches introductory American Sign Language courses: ASL 101, ASL 102 and ASL 105.
