Painters Painting (1973)

Film Series curated by Douglas Crimp in conjuncture with his graduate seminar "Topics in Contemporary Art and Criticism: Andy Warhol"

Dryden Theatre

Wednesday's through October 2017

From 1963 to 1968, Andy Warhol shot hundreds of reels of film starring his Factory friends—beautiful loquacious women, sexy silent boys, fabulous drag queens, speed freaks, and junkies. Our series begins, however, with a film by Warhol’s friend Emile de Antonio, whose Painters Painting depicts the art world out of which Warhol emerged. You can see immediately how different Warhol was from his fellow artists, and indeed by the time De Antonio shot the film, Warhol claimed to have given up painting altogether in favor of filmmaking. We begin Warhol’s own films with the silent Haircut no. 1, Mario Banana in both color and black and white versions, and the rarely seen Soap Opera with Baby Jane Holzer Two double-screen films starring Warhol’s favorite, Edie Sedgwick, are a highlight of the series. Outer and Inner Space is black and white, TV and film at once. Lupe, in gorgeous color, pretends to be about “Mexican Spitfire” Lupe Valez. The series concludes with I, a Man, a post-Chelsea Girls sexploitation films. Hollywood actor Tom Baker pursues eight women, talking with some, fighting with some, flirting with some. Among the women is a very comical Valerie Solanas, who a year later would shoot and almost kill Warhol.
