Kant and Rousseau on Human Dignity

The aim of this lecture is to trace the emergence of the word and the idea of "human dignity" as an inalienable quality of the human being in the 18th-century philosophical debate on the nature of man, in particular as articulated in the works of Rousseau and Kant. This return to the Enlightenment elucidates certain aspects of current debates on human dignity and puts the current opposition between dignity-autonomy and religious dignity in a new light.
