Even more exciting, I got a personal tour of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ds.iris.edu\/mda\/AF\/IFE\" target=\"_blank\">IFE <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-454 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tolulopeolugboji.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FDSN__AF__Africa_Array.jpg\" alt=\"FDSN__AF__Africa_Array\" width=\"403\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FDSN__AF__Africa_Array.jpg 889w, https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FDSN__AF__Africa_Array-600x382.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FDSN__AF__Africa_Array-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FDSN__AF__Africa_Array-768x489.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/>seismic station<\/a><\/strong>, one of the <strong>five<\/strong>\u00a0seismic\u00a0stations on the Nigerian National Network of Seismographic Stations (<a href=\"https:\/\/ds.iris.edu\/ds\/newsletter\/vol15\/no3\/the-new-nigerian-network-of-seismographic-stations\/\" target=\"_blank\">NNNSS<\/a>) and one of <strong>three<\/strong> on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fdsn.org\/networks\/detail\/AF\/\" target=\"_blank\">AfricaArray<\/a>\u00a0(photo on\u00a0the left).\u00a0I am flanked by my former undergraduate thesis advisor and head of the department of computer science, <a href=\"http:\/\/cse.oauife.edu.ng\/groups\/staff\/1\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Oluwarati<\/a>,\u00a0the resident\u00a0expert on the seismic installation, and geophysics professor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Adekunle_Adepelumi2\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Adepelumi<\/a>\u00a0and my mum (photo below). I learn about the seismic stations, located in a buried vault, securely guarded and under lock and key. The seismic station is an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eentec.com\/EP-105_data.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Eentec EP-105<\/a>, has a\u00a0GPS unit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eentec.com\/DR-4000_data.htm\" target=\"_blank\">data logger<\/a>, telemetry system and a solar power system which allows it to run continuously\u00a0.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tolulopeolugboji.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AtSeismicStation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-455 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tolulopeolugboji.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AtSeismicStation.jpg\" alt=\"AtSeismicStation\" width=\"342\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AtSeismicStation.jpg 903w, https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AtSeismicStation-600x407.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AtSeismicStation-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/urseismo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AtSeismicStation-768x521.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a>The station is located in the quiet neighborhood of the research farm at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oauife.edu.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\">Obafemi Awolowo University<\/a>, Ile-Ife, ~<a href=\"http:\/\/alldistancebetween.com\/in\/distance-between\/ife-lagos-9636a82f460df50305992e4e5f17dbcd\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 138 miles<\/a>\u00a0from Lagos, Nigeria. It\u00a0possesses all the capabilities to monitor, record and telemeter distant earthquake sources to the local IRIS facility. It started recording earthquakes in 2008 (same year I graduated from Ife) and as of 2011, all the data has been made freely available for download and access through the normal IRIS data access channels.<\/p>\n<p>I hope to learn more about the data and keep an eye towards future research applications of the data to the study of the geology, tectonics, structure and architecture of the crust and mantle in Western Africa.<\/p>\n<p>I include here\u00a0a summary of papers that explore the elastic properties in Nigeria derived from this station and a selection of recently published work\u00a0using the seismic data:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ofonime Akpan, Andrew Nyblade, Chiedu Okereke \u00a0, Michael Oden , Erica Emry , Jordi Juli\u00e0\u00a0(2016), \u00a0<em>Crustal structure of Nigeria and Southern Ghana, West Africa from P-wave receiver functions<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.africaarray.psu.edu\/publications\/pdfs\/Akpan_et_al_Tectonophys_2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Tectonophysics<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Madu Uchenna Onwuhaka\u00a0(2014), \u00a0<em>SWOT Analysis\u00a0of Nigerian National Network\u00a0of\u00a0Seismological\u00a0stations\u00a0(NNNSS) as Auxiliary Stations at EIF<\/em>\u00a0[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctbto.org\/fileadmin\/snt2013\/posters\/T3-P108.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">poster<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Yakubu Tahir Abubakar (2014), <em>Investigation of the crust and upper mantle structures from teleseismic p-wave travel time residuals<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/kubanni.abu.edu.ng:8080\/jspui\/bitstream\/123456789\/5937\/1\/INVESTIGATION%20OF%20THE%20CRUST%20AND%20UPPER%20MANTLE%20STRUCTURES%20FROM%20TELESEISMIC%20P-WAVE%20TRAVEL%20TIME%20RESIDUALS%20BENEATH%20SOME%20SEISMIC%20STATIONS%20IN%20NIGERIA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">PhD dissertation<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Kadiri Umar Afegbua and \u00a0F.O.
