Instrument Features
The SmartLab is a highly versatile, state-of-the-art multi-purpose XRD system capable of evaluating bulk powders, thin films, nanomaterials, and irregularly-shaped materials.

- Standard powder diffraction (phase identification and quantitative analysis).
- Thin film characterization, including X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and high-resolution XRD (HRXRD).
- Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) for depth-controlled surface analysis.
- Texture (pole figures) and residual stress evaluations.
- Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) for particle and pore sizing.
- Variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (VTXRD) via an Anton Paar TTK 600 apparatus (83 - 873 K).
- Advanced automated optics selection via SmartLab Studio II software guidance.
Training
- New users must be trained by the Chemistry technical staff.
- Training is requested through the FOM system.
- Upon completion of training, users can independently reserve instrument time.
Results
- Users may retrieve their data at the end of a scheduled session, or request to receive the results via Box.
- SmartLab Studio II is available for data processing.
- ICDD PDF-5+ 2026 database is available for on-site use.
Rates
- Rates are determined by FOM, currently set at $51/hr.
