Art and Mass Culture in East Asia
summer 2020 online course
Monday, June 29Friday, July 24, 2020
East Asia is now perhaps the world’s most dynamic region, and its dramatic social and economic transformation has been mirrored in the work of a host of startlingly original and innovative visual artists. The class will explore contemporary art and mass culture in China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. We will begin with a historical survey of the developments of photography, painting, print and film in East Asia since the mid-19th century, but we will concentrate on the period from 1960 to the present. We will study artistic developments in performance, video, installation, as well as painting. To better understand contemporary East Asian art in its larger media context, we will also look at popular culture productions such as animation, the culture of cuteness in Japan, and the Korean entertainment industry.
