Memory and Fiction: Wojciech Nowicki’s Salki

The Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies and Open Letter Books cordially invite you to a panel discussion and a book signing: Memory and Fiction: Wojciech Nowicki’s Salki. A work of Polish reportage about travel, anxiety, memory, and violence, Salki won the prestigious Gdynia Literary Award for Essay when it was first published in Poland. Using the English translation of this work as a starting point, panelists—including Wojciech Nowicki, the author and Jan Pytalski, the translator—will discuss ideas of landscape, literature, photography, and Eastern European history. Also on the panel: Chad Post, Director of Open Letter Books, and Randall Stone, Director of the Skalny Center and Professor of Political Science.

Wojciech Nowicki is a Polish essayist, journalist, critic, photographer, and even writes a culinary column. He is also the co-founder of the Imago Mundi Foundation devoted to promoting photography. Salki, his first book to be translated into English, received the 2014 Gdynia Literary Award in the Essay category.

Jan Pytalski is a graduate of the American Studies Center at the University of Warsaw, and has an MA in translation from the University of Rochester. He is a journalist and translator of several works on contemporary philosophy.Salki is his first literary translation.
