Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway play by David Ives, which itself was based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's groundbreaking novella, Venus in Fur is the latest film from master filmmaker Roman Polanski. Alone in a Paris theater after a long day of auditioning actresses for his new play, writer-director Thomas complains about the poor caliber of talent. As Thomas is about to leave, Vanda bursts in, a whirlwind of erratic—and erotic—energy. When Thomas agrees, reluctantly, to let her audition, he learns not only is Vanda a perfect fit, but she apparently has researched the role exhaustively—down to buying props, reading source materials and learning every line by heart. As the extended “audition” builds momentum, Thomas moves from attraction to obsession. A wicked psychological study, Venus in Fur is a riveting, entertaining and expertly made film that is sure to have audience members talking after the credits roll.
