Barnes & Noble at University of Rochester (1205 Mt. Hope Ave)

Bilingual Reading by the translator Sevinç Türkkan of The Stone Building and Other Places (City Lights Books) by the Turkish woman writer and human rights activist, Aslı Erdoğan

Sevinç Türkkan is among the few women in Rochester who translate other women and the only one who translates from a non-Western language.

The author, Aslı Erdoğan was arrested for her pro-Kurdish stance and remained in prison for 4 months without trial following the failed military coup in Turkey in 2016. She is very prominent in Europe thanks to the availability of French, German, and Dutch translations of all of her books. Most recently she received France’s Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Human Rights among other European awards. Only two of her twelve books (fiction and non-fiction) are available in English, The Stone Building being one of them. This translation is also an act of service and activism.
