Orhan Pamuk Reading Group
September 21, 2017
05:00 PM - 06:00 PM
Repeats: Weekly on Thu until Oct, 19 2017
Treasure Room (adjoining Lam Square)
Rush Rhees Library and the Humanities Center are co-sponsoring a reading group, to be led by Prof. Sevinç Türkkan of Religion & Classics. The group will read and discuss Orhan Pamuk's The Museum of Innocence, a novel about memory, love and loss in Istanbul in the mid-1970s.
The group will meet on Thursday evenings, from 5 to 6 PM, in the Treasure Room adjoining Lam Square. Sessions are planned for September 21st and 28th, and on October 5th, 12th and 19th. On the 19th, following our final discussion of the book, we will have a special presentation in the Humanities Center Lounge, with visual displays of Pamuk's memory palace, and a description of life in Istanbul by a Rochester student.
We are planning a "soft start" on the 21st, because many may be observing Rosh Hashanah -- if you can't attend the first session, please come on the 28th! Reading-group members will also be invited to an informal question-and-answer session with Orhan Pamuk from 2 to 3 p.m. on October 25th in the Humanities Center, prior to his presentation at 5 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel.
