In the spirit of the Rochester Oratorio Society which is performing Dona Nobis Pacem as “a powerful, hopeful commemoration of the centennial of the U.S. entry into World War I,” this talk takes up the issue of centennial commemorations of the Great War – in this case, in the United Kingdom. Looking at a few of the art commissions sponsored by 14-18-Now, it asks what is at stake in imagining the war and performing its remembrance in a moment when the war has ceased to exist as a living memory for any of its participants.
