Cheryl G. Howard, Senior Data Scientist, IBM Analytics

Abstract: Data Science is an incredibly fast growing and sought after career field that combines aspects of computer science, statistics, engineering, and business understanding.   The interdisciplinary nature of the field and applicability to virtually any industry provide limitless career possibilities.  Dr. Howard will reflect on her long career in Data Science and discuss opportunities, challenges, and current trends in the field as well as skills and strategies for success.

Biography: Dr. Cheryl Howard is a Senior Data Scientist at IBM with over 25 years’ experience in machine learning and predictive analytics.  She works directly with customers to build, evaluate, and deploy solutions in the areas of fraud detection, customer intelligence, and cognitive customer support for both commercial and government enterprises.  Her recent work has focused on the integration of existing model development tools into big data and cloud environments. 

Dr. Howard received her M.S. and D.Sc. in Computer Engineering, with a concentration Machine Learning, from The George Washington University in 1997.  Her doctoral research focused on intelligent image understanding using a statistical learning approach.  Her interest in vision systems and experimental design began as an undergraduate at The University of Rochester, where she was an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Center for Visual Science and took many courses in the Institute of Optics.
