The Department of Chemistry offers two summer research programs for undergraduates:
- National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU)
- i-Scholar: Summer Research Program for International Undergraduate Students
Summer Research—NSF REU (2022-2024)
We are excited to announce the upcoming introduction of a “Research Experience for Undergraduate” (REU) program starting in the summer of 2022. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, our Chemistry REU program (called “UR C-REU”) will support ten visiting undergraduate students for a 10-week research and professional development experience each summer. UR C-REU fellows will have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research related to the synthesis and discovery of new drugs, energy research and sustainable chemistry.
UR C-REU fellows are assigned their own research problem and will work closely with both a graduate student or postdoctoral mentor and their faculty advisor. The program combines an immersive research experience with an array of professional development activities focused on research ethics, project management, networking, entrepreneurship, scientific communication, and outreach. Participants are recruited nationally, with an emphasis on attracting students who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM and may have limited access to research opportunities at their home institutions.
Students will be supported by a $5,500 stipend and additional funding for travel, housing and food. Applications to the REU program will be evaluated in January and the summer program will begin in June. Further information about the application process will be available here in the fall of 2021.
